Bhiwandi : Tension gripped Bhiwandi on Monday as the Municipal Corporation began a major road-widening project from Anjur Phata to Kalyan Naka under tight police security. The nearly 2-km stretch is being expanded from 24 metres to 36 metres to reduce traffic bottlenecks and aid the progress of Metro Line-5.
Demolitions Underway Across the Stretch
Demolition squads, supported by police personnel, rolled out in the early hours with JCB machines, pulling down marked structures. By evening, several commercial units had already been razed, while some owners vacated voluntarily to avoid abrupt damage.
Protest Erupts as Youth Confronts MP’s Convoy
A dramatic moment unfolded at Dhamankar Naka when a young man rushed towards the convoy of MP Suresh Mhatre, popularly known as Balya Mama. Waving a black flag, he shouted, “We Want Justice,” bringing the convoy to a brief halt. In the ensuing chaos, supporters of the MP were allegedly seen assaulting the protester. Police have yet to announce any action or arrests related to the incident.

Residents Unhappy With Compensation, Demand Fair Rates
The widening drive has triggered mixed reactions, with several residents calling the offered TDR rate of ₹300 per sq ft insufficient. Many are demanding compensation at par with Mumbai’s redevelopment norms, claiming the current offer does not match the market value of their properties. Locals also criticised their elected leaders for failing to address their concerns during this crucial phase.
