Mumbai : A series of fire incidents have disrupted the Mumbai-Pune corridor, with 17 separate fires reported in Pimpri-Chinchwad over a 16-hour period from October 20 to 21. The majority of these fires were attributed to decorative lights and firecrackers, common during the Diwali festivities. Notably, a significant blaze occurred at an electric two-wheeler service center in Wakad, destroying over 60 vehicles. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
The Pune Fire Brigade responded to a total of 65 fire incidents during the Diwali period, with 17 occurring in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Authorities have attributed the increase in incidents to the widespread use of firecrackers and decorative lights. Despite the surge in fire-related calls, the prompt response from fire services and public cooperation have been credited with preventing serious injuries or fatalities.
In response to the rising number of fire incidents, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has initiated continuous monitoring of sound levels during Diwali to assess the impact of firecrackers on noise pollution. The data collected will help refine noise pollution management strategies for future festivals.
Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and adhere to fire safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable Diwali celebration.
