The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has suspended its Deputy Director of Town Planning, Y.S. Reddy, following massive raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which uncovered assets worth over ₹32 crore. These included unaccounted cash, gold, diamonds, and property documents during searches conducted in Vasai-Virar and Hyderabad.
The ED investigation revealed that Reddy was allegedly involved in approving 41 unauthorized buildings on land reserved for sewage and waste management, in exchange for hefty bribes. The illegal constructions spanned nearly 60 acres, and multiple VVMC officials were found to be part of the corrupt nexus.
During the raid, authorities recovered approximately ₹8.6 crore in cash and ₹23.25 crore worth of jewellery and bullion. The VVMC acted swiftly by suspending Reddy, effective from May 14, 2025, citing violations of government service conduct rules.
In response to the ongoing investigation, 19 town planning staff members were also transferred to other departments. Meanwhile, the ED has expanded its probe to include former municipal commissioner Anil Pawar, seizing an additional ₹1.3 crore in cash and documents related to shell companies used for laundering illicit funds.
The ED suspects a deep-rooted corruption network involving builders, civic officials, architects, and chartered accountants, and has termed the seized assets as just “the tip of the iceberg.” Investigations are still underway.
