Nagpur:-
In a significant and nuanced statement, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat has said that there should be no objection to individuals choosing to convert to another religion voluntarily. Speaking at an event in Nagpur, Bhagwat underscored the importance of national unity and collective responsibility in building a self-reliant India.
Addressing an audience amid ongoing discussions around religious freedom and anti-conversion laws in several Indian states, Bhagwat drew a clear distinction between coercive conversions and those made through personal choice. “If someone chooses their path with awareness and without pressure, there is no reason to object,” he said.
His remarks come at a time when the subject of religious conversion continues to stir political and social discourse across the country. Bhagwat made it clear that the Sangh strongly opposes conversions carried out through deceit, force, or financial inducement — practices that he said are deeply concerning. However, he called for a more measured and constitutional approach when it comes to voluntary faith transitions.
Echoing the RSS’s larger message of national cohesion, he appealed to all communities to rise above divisions and work together to strengthen the fabric of the country. “India’s strength lies in its unity,” he said, “and that unity can only be built on mutual respect and trust.”
Bhagwat’s statement is being seen as a reminder that in a democratic and diverse society, personal beliefs — when chosen freely — should be protected, not politicised.
