Mumbai – Celebrated public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, best known for his role in securing justice in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu. The nomination recognizes his decades-long contribution to India’s legal system, particularly in high-profile cases involving terrorism and national security.
With a legal career spanning over 40 years, Nikam has earned nationwide respect for his courtroom expertise and successful prosecution in landmark cases such as the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, the Ajmal Kasab trial, and the murders of Gulshan Kumar and BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.
Awarded the Padma Shri in 2016, Nikam is renowned for his meticulous case preparation and unwavering pursuit of justice. His nomination is expected to bring invaluable legal and prosecutorial experience to the upper house of Parliament, particularly in discussions around legal reforms and national security.
Although he lost the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North Central, Nikam’s professional integrity and contributions remain widely acknowledged. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his nomination, highlighting his commitment to public service.
Nikam joins three other eminent personalities nominated to the Rajya Sabha — former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Kerala-based activist and teacher C. Sadanandan Master, and historian and Padma Shri awardee Meenakshi Jain.
