Mumbai: Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, widely recognized for his iconic role as Karna in B.R. Chopra’s television epic Mahabharat, passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 68. He had been battling cancer for several years, with his condition worsening in recent months despite undergoing major treatment.
His close friend and producer Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news, saying, “He passed away due to cancer this morning. He had been in and out of the hospital over the past few months.”
Dheer’s portrayal of Karna left an enduring mark on Indian television, making him a household name. Interestingly, he had originally auditioned for the role of Arjun, but it was his distinctive moustache that secured him the legendary character of Karna—a turn of events he later described as destiny.

Apart from television, Dheer appeared in popular films like Sadak, Soldier, and Badshah, and starred in series such as Chandrakanta, The Great Maratha, Yug, and Badho Bahu.
He is survived by his wife Anita Dheer and son Nikitin Dheer, who is also an actor. Colleagues and fans alike have paid tribute, remembering his immense contribution to Indian cinema and television.
The cremation ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 pm today at Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.
