MUMBAI : Vantara has announced its support for the Maharashtra government’s petition seeking the return of the Mahadevi elephant, Madhuri, to the Nandani Math in Kolhapur. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the development on Wednesday through a post on social media platform X.
CM Fadnavis shared, “I held a detailed discussion with senior officials of Vantara Management in Mumbai today. They assured me that Vantara will participate in the petition the Maharashtra government plans to file for the safe return of the Mahadevi elephant (Madhuri) to Nandani Math.”
He further clarified that Vantara had followed the directions of the Supreme Court and had no intention of claiming ownership of the elephant. The sanctuary also expressed its willingness to assist the state in setting up a rehabilitation centre for Madhuri near the Math in Kolhapur district.
In an official statement, Vantara emphasized its respect for the religious sentiments attached to Madhuri, acknowledging her spiritual and cultural significance to the Jain Math and the Kolhapur community.
“Vantara’s role was solely to follow judicial orders from the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court. We neither initiated nor recommended Madhuri’s relocation,” the statement said. “Our involvement was limited to providing care and housing as an independent rescue and rehabilitation centre.”
Vantara has now agreed to extend full support to the state and Jain Math’s application for Madhuri’s return, subject to court approval. The sanctuary will also help establish a satellite rehabilitation facility near Nandani Math, built with the guidance of the Jain Guru, the Forest Department, and other authorities.
Vantara’s expert team is ready to begin work upon receiving official permissions and pledged to follow both Indian and international best practices in elephant welfare. The organisation concluded with a heartfelt apology to the Jain community, stating: “If our actions, even under legal direction, caused any distress, we sincerely apologise. Michhami Dukkadam.”
Vantara reaffirmed its commitment to animal welfare, legal responsibility, and community respect, expressing hope for unity in ensuring Madhuri’s well-being.
