In a significant boost to regional language advocacy, the Union Home Ministry has extended full support to Maharashtra’s initiatives aimed at promoting the Marathi language across government departments and public institutions. Responding to long-standing appeals from state leaders and cultural organizations, the Centre has approved measures mandating the use of Marathi in official signage, communication, and public-facing services throughout the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that disciplinary action could be taken against officials who fail to comply with the new language directives. The decision is part of a broader state-led strategy to strengthen Marathi linguistic and cultural identity—an agenda that also includes the celebration of “Classical Marathi Language Day” on October 3 and compulsory Marathi language instruction in schools.
The Home Ministry’s backing has been hailed by political and cultural figures as a landmark step in affirming Marathi pride and regional heritage, further energizing the discourse around language policy and governance in Maharashtra.
