Mumbai has reported two fatalities at KEM Hospital, where patients tested positive for Covid-19 posthumously. A 14-year-old girl with nephrotic syndrome died due to kidney failure, and a 59-year-old cancer patient succumbed to sepsis. Hospital authorities emphasized that Covid-19 was not the primary cause of death in either case .
This comes as Maharashtra experiences a surge in Covid-19 cases, with 53 new infections reported between May 12 and May 18, primarily in Mumbai.
Health experts attribute the increase to sub-variants LF-7 and NB 1.5 of the JN-1 strain, which typically cause mild symptoms such as cough, cold, and low-grade fever. While these variants are not considered severe, medical professionals recommend continued caution, including the use of face masks and maintaining hygiene.
Vaccination remains a key defense, with authorities urging citizens to stay up to date with booster doses to reduce the risk of severe illness from emerging variants.
