Mumbai : Tensions within Maharashtra’s ruling MahaYuti alliance have intensified, as clashes between the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were reported in at least 18 districts across the state ahead of the local body elections.
According to reports, disagreements have erupted over seat-sharing and leadership dominance in several key districts, including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar, and Ulhasnagar. The friction reportedly stems from accusations by the Shiv Sena that BJP leaders are sidelining their allies and asserting greater control in local affairs.
In Thane and Navi Mumbai, public altercations between party workers have highlighted the growing mistrust. Sena leaders have accused the BJP of trying to “weaken the alliance from within,” while demanding more respect and independence (“swabhiman”) for their cadres in the electoral process.
Political observers believe these disputes could impact the MahaYuti’s performance in the upcoming civic elections if not swiftly resolved. Senior leaders from both parties are expected to hold joint meetings soon to iron out the differences and finalise seat-sharing arrangements.
The developments come at a crucial time when the alliance aims to consolidate its power at the local level, but the widening cracks suggest that internal rivalries may pose a serious challenge to its unity ahead of the polls.
