Bhiwandi: A major road-widening operation from Anjur Phata to Kalyan Naka kicked off on Monday under tight police security, sparking tension across the city. The project aims to expand the 2-km stretch from 24 metres to 36 metres to ease traffic congestion and support Metro Line-5 construction.

Demolition Underway Along the Stretch

Early in the morning, demolition squads accompanied by police personnel began removing structures using JCB machines. By evening, several shops were razed, while many owners voluntarily cleared their premises to avoid sudden losses.

Youth Stages Protest With Black FlagA dramatic incident unfolded at Dhamankar Naka in the evening when a youth rushed in front of MP Suresh Mhatre’s (Balya Mama) convoy, waving a black flag and shouting, “We want justice.”
The sudden protest stalled the convoy. Amid the chaos, the youth was dragged away, and supporters of the MP were allegedly seen manhandling him.
Police have not reported any arrests or action regarding the incident so far.

Residents Upset Over Compensation, TDR Rates

The demolition drive has triggered mixed reactions among residents. Many are demanding compensation comparable to redevelopment norms in Mumbai, stating that the offered TDR rate of ₹300 per sq ft is far below the market value of their properties.
Locals also expressed disappointment over the silence of their elected representatives during a time of growing public concern.
