Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has been lodged in Tihar Jail’s high-security cell under 24-hour surveillance, according to prison sources. This development follows a Delhi court’s decision to remand him in judicial custody until June 6 2025.
Rana was produced before Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Judge Chander Jit Singh a day prior to the conclusion of his NIA custody. Subsequently, he was transferred to Tihar Jail amid tight security measures.
Upon arrival, Rana entered through gate number four, underwent a medical examination, and was assigned to jail number two, designated for high-risk inmates. Security personnel have been deployed outside his cell, and his activities are being monitored continuously.
Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian national and former military doctor, is a close associate of David Coleman Headley, the main conspirator of the 26/11 attacks. He was extradited to India after the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed his plea against extradition on April 4.
The 2008 Mumbai attacks resulted in the deaths of over 160 individuals and injuries to hundreds more. Rana’s extradition and subsequent custody mark a significant step in the ongoing investigation and prosecution related to the attacks.
