Soon, Book Mumbai Local Train Tickets via WhatsApp: Indian Railways Plans Digital Upgrade

Share:

Mumbai : Indian Railways is planning to introduce a WhatsApp-based ticket booking system for Mumbai’s local trains, aiming to simplify and digitize the ticketing process for millions of daily commuters.

The initiative is part of the government’s Digital India campaign and will allow passengers to book tickets directly through WhatsApp by simply scanning a QR code, starting a chat, and following easy prompts to select the destination and pay online. The ticket will then be delivered in the form of a QR code on WhatsApp.

Railway officials have already held discussions with tech partners to finalize the system. Once the technical process is set, tenders will be issued for implementation.

Currently, around 25% of local train tickets in Mumbai are booked digitally through platforms like the UTS app and ATVM machines. With the addition of WhatsApp, officials hope to make digital ticketing more accessible, especially for users who may find other apps complicated.

The service is expected to launch in the coming months after testing and final approvals.
