Mumbai : A silent rally organized to protest the proposed demolition of local Kabootarkhanas (pigeon shelters) was halted by police on Saturday, triggering public concern over the right to peaceful protest and compassion for animals.
Led by Rakesh Manikchand Kothari of the Sherry and Diya Foundation, the rally was planned as a quiet demonstration — with no slogans or loudspeakers, only placards advocating kindness towards pigeons. Despite the non-disruptive nature of the protest, police reportedly stopped participants before the march could begin.
“There was no chaos, no shouting — only people standing for the voiceless,” said Mr. Kothari. “Our only demand was: don’t demolish the Kabootarkhanas. But even that wasn’t allowed.”
The incident has sparked debate around freedom of expression and the growing tension between urban development and animal rights. Participants — including women, youth, and senior citizens — questioned whether standing up for animals is now being treated as a punishable act.
Organizers are urging citizens from all communities to stand together to protect the shelters. “This is not about politics,” said Kothari. “We simply urge authorities not to destroy the tiny homes of mute birds.”
