Munbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday confirmed that his party will not be challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Supreme Court, signaling a closure of the issue from their side.
Speaking to the media, Raut stated, “We have made our stance clear. Our role is done, and this matter is now closed for us.”
This announcement comes a day after Raut sharply criticized the bill, describing it as a commercial maneuver rather than a genuine step to protect the rights and welfare of the Muslim community. He alleged that the government was more interested in gaining control over Waqf properties—valued at an estimated ₹2 lakh crore—than in safeguarding community interests.
Meanwhile, several opposition leaders have taken the legal route against the bill. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress leader Mohammad Jawed, and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan have filed petitions in the Supreme Court challenging the legislation.
The controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed in both houses of Parliament, with Lok Sabha clearing it after a lengthy debate and Rajya Sabha pushing it through in a late-night session. The bill now awaits President Droupadi Murmu’s assent to become law.
The revised legislation, introduced after review by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, seeks to amend the Waqf Act of 1995. It aims to streamline the administration of Waqf properties through better registration processes, increased use of technology, and stronger governance by Waqf boards.
