Mumbai : Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty and her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, have been booked by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police in connection with an alleged ₹60.48 crore cheating and misappropriation case.
The FIR, based on a complaint by Juhu-based businessman Deepak Kothari, director of Lotus Capital Financial Services, accuses the couple and their company Best Deal TV Pvt. Ltd. of inducing him to provide a ₹75 crore “loan” in 2015, promising 12% annual returns. Kothari claims ₹31.95 crore was transferred in April 2015 and ₹28.53 crore in September 2015, but the money was later reclassified as an “investment” without his consent.
Shilpa Shetty resigned as company director in 2016, and by 2017 the firm faced insolvency proceedings. The case has been registered under IPC sections for criminal breach of trust and dishonest misappropriation, and transferred to the EOW due to the large sum involved.
Both Shetty and Kundra have denied the allegations, calling them “false, baseless, and arising from an old transaction,” and have assured cooperation with the investigation.
The EOW is now tracing the money trail and examining the role of all parties involved.
