Mumbai : The South Central Railway (SCR) will convert seven major trains from conventional rakes to Linke-Hofmann Busch (LHB) rakes between January 13 and 17, coinciding with the Pongal festival rush. While the move aims to improve passenger safety, stability, and comfort, it has triggered concerns among travelers due to a notable reduction in sleeper-class accommodation.
Under the new LHB configuration, several trains—including the SMVT Bengaluru–Nagercoil Express and the Kakinada Town–SMVT Bengaluru Seshadri Express—will operate with fewer sleeper coaches. This shift is expected to push many passengers toward higher-priced AC classes, making long-distance travel more expensive for those who rely on affordable sleeper tickets.
Passengers argue that the reduction in sleeper-class availability could severely impact budget travellers, especially during the festive season when demand is already high. They fear the changes may limit access to economical travel options across major routes.
The railway authorities maintain that the LHB upgrade will enhance overall safety and efficiency, although concerns from regular commuters continue to grow.
