Mumbai: Heavy rains triggered a retaining wall collapse in Chembur’s Ashok Nagar near Vashi Naka on Sunday evening, damaging at least seven homes. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as residents evacuated in time after noticing cracks and falling debris.
A dramatic video of the collapse has gone viral on social media. Officials confirmed that the wall, constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), gave way under pressure from continuous showers.
Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade and BMC rushed to the site, cleared debris, and ensured no one was trapped. The affected families were shifted to temporary shelters at Marvali Church in Chembur, where basic facilities have been arranged.
Local MLA Sana Malik Shaikh visited the spot, directed immediate rehabilitation measures, and assured continued support for displaced families. She also confirmed that the Disaster Management Department, Fire Brigade, and RCF Police acted promptly, with a detailed survey to be conducted by the District Collector’s office.
