Mumbai : In a significant push to boost capacity on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar has advocated for the introduction of more 15-coach local trains. During a late-night inspection of the ongoing Rs 85-crore upgrade at Khar Road Station, Kumar urged authorities to ensure all revamped platforms are capable of handling extended rakes wherever feasible.

The move aims to cater to the increasing commuter load and is part of the broader modernization drive under the Rs 950-crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A, which targets upgrades at 17 major suburban stations.

Kumar arrived in Mumbai on Saturday night and carried out the site inspection from 10:40 PM to 11:20 PM, expressing satisfaction over the work and praising MRVC’s efforts. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards at the improved facilities.

On Sunday, the Railway Board chief visited Nashik to assess preparations for the 2027 Kumbh Mela. Central Railway has sanctioned 33 infrastructure projects for the event, with tenders floated for 22 and seven already finalized.
