Prakash Raj: “Half of Bollywood Is Sold, the Rest Are Scared

Actor Prakash Raj has never shied away from expressing his political opinions and frequently criticizes the policies of the ruling party. In a recent interview, the Duet actor spoke candidly about his colleagues in the Hindi film industry who refrain from speaking on political issues. He claimed that while some are afraid, “half of them are sold” and unwilling to speak out against the government.

Speaking to The Lallantop, Prakash emphasized that while the government may attempt to stifle dissent, filmmakers have a responsibility to create thought-provoking cinema and be prepared to fight for its release. He said, “Any powerful government will try to stop discussions. But the responsibility also lies with artists. They should be conscious of the films they make and be willing to fight for their release. That kind of resilience is needed.”

Criticizing the silence among his peers, he continued, “Half of them are sold—my own colleagues—and the rest are afraid because they don’t have the strength. A very close friend once told me, ‘Prakash, you have the courage to speak, I don’t.’ I told him I understand, but I can’t excuse him. When history is written, it may forgive those who committed crimes, but not those who stayed silent. Everyone is responsible.”

Facing Industry Pushback

Prakash also admitted that his outspoken political stance has affected his career, especially in the Hindi film industry. “They’re worried that if they work with us, they might lose certain opportunities or benefits. That’s just the reality of the environment we’re in,” he said. “But this only strengthens my resolve to speak up. We have to raise our voices and fight what’s wrong.”

When asked if actors lose opportunities for speaking out, he replied, “It’s not that you won’t get work—you will—but not as much.”
