Over 30,000 Nurses Across Maharashtra Begin Indefinite Strike Over Staffing, Pay Issues; Hospital Services Disrupted in Major Cities

Mumbai:- Over 30,000 government nurses across Maharashtra have launched an indefinite state-wide strike, demanding permanent recruitment, pay parity, and improved working conditions. The protest, led by the Maharashtra State Nursing Association (MSNA), stems from dissatisfaction with contractual hiring policies and unfulfilled promises made after earlier negotiations.
The strike has severely impacted public healthcare services in key cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, where major hospitals are facing staff shortages. In Nagpur, surgeries at GMCH and Mayo Hospital were postponed due to lack of nursing support, while Pune’s Sassoon Hospital saw over 300 nurses join the protest, raising concerns over patient care.
MSNA officials cited unequal salaries, overburdened staff, and unaddressed vacancies as core issues. With negotiations failing to yield results, the association has vowed to continue the strike until the government meets their demands for better pay, permanent jobs, and increased student stipends.
