Mumbai : The Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate has initiated a significant reorganization by establishing a new Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) circle based in Belapur, aiming to improve policing efficiency across the steadily expanding city.
Under the plan, jurisdiction will be restructured into three zones—Zone 1 and Zone 2 currently exist—each overseen by a DCP. Belapur will serve as the hub for one such zone, ensuring swifter oversight of law-and-order concerns in the area. In addition, four new police stations are proposed for high-growth sectors: Ghansoli, Airoli, Karanjade (Panvel), and the combined Uran-Mora region. A dedicated Airport Police Station has also been proposed to support security at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport .
This initiative stems from mounting pressure on the current system—with just 21 police stations under two zones—now struggling to cope with rapidly rising population, infrastructure expansion, and urban development .
Though the proposal—submitted under Commissioner Milind Bharambe’s leadership—is awaiting government approval, it is designed with a forward-looking 20-year projection. Its aim is to decentralize law enforcement, enhance crime response, and better protect public safety in Navi Mumbai’s diverse and high-density zones .
Key Points in Brief:
New Structure: Introduction of a third zone headed by a DCP located in Belapur.
New Stations: Four fresh stations proposed in Ghansoli, Airoli, Karanjade, Uran-Mora region, plus a dedicated Airport Police Station.
Objective: To relieve the burden on existing stations, optimize response times, and manage security around the new international airport.
Next Steps: Awaiting final verdict from the state government, expected post-Assembly elections.
This restructuring marks a pivotal step toward strengthening public safety and law enforcement infrastructure in Navi Mumbai, reflecting a proactive response to the city’s accelerated urbanization.
