Mumbai: Property owners and tenants across Mumbai have raised strong objections to the recent 40% hike in property tax, citing severe economic and social repercussions. Mahim-based social worker Irfan Machiwala has voiced serious concern, stating that the increased tax burden is unsustainable for homeowners, landlords, and businesses alike.
“When the Government raises property tax, it places a significant financial burden on homeowners and landlords, who are required to pay more annually,” Machiwala said. “This burden is often passed on to tenants in the form of increased rent, especially in urban areas like Mumbai, thereby raising the overall cost of living.”
He warned that such sharp increases could depress property values by reducing demand, especially in high-tax areas, and may shift buyer interest toward regions with lower tax obligations — potentially destabilizing the real estate market.
Machiwala urged all affected property owners to unite and approach their elected representatives — including MPs, MLAs, MLCs, former corporators, and social activists — to demand immediate intervention from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
“The tax hike should be withdrawn, and refunds must be issued to those who have already paid the increased amount,” he asserted.
