Mumbai : In a major development ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, Maharashtra’s Minister for Fisheries and Ports Development, Nitesh Rane, announced that the long-awaited Ro-Ro ferry service between Mumbai and Ratnagiri will officially commence on September 1.

Calling it South Asia’s fastest Ro-Ro ferry service, Rane said the journey between Mumbai and Ratnagiri will now take just five hours, offering a huge relief to travelers. The project, eagerly anticipated by people across Maharashtra, is set to be a boon for Mumbai residents as well as Konkan locals and tourists.

According to officials, the state government has completed all necessary preparations, and approvals from the Centre have also been secured. Initially, the service will connect Mumbai’s Bhaucha Dhakka with Ratnagiri’s Jaigad and Sindhudurg’s Vijaydurg.

Rane further revealed that plans are underway to expand the service to Srivardhan and Mandwa, once jetty constructions are completed. He emphasized that the ferry service will reduce the burden on rail and road transport and emerge as a game-changer for connectivity in the Konkan region.

The government has also expedited jetty construction at Dighi, Kashid, and Alibag, with instructions to complete the Alibag jetty before Diwali.
