Mumbai-Pune Expressway Set for 10-Lane Expansion by 2030 to Ease Traffic Congestion

Mumbai : The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced plans to expand the Mumbai-Pune Expressway into a 10-lane superhighway by 2030 to cater to future traffic demands and reduce congestion.

According to MSRDC officials, the upcoming project will upgrade the current eight-lane expressway and cost an additional ₹1,420 crore, taking the total construction cost to ₹8,440 crore. The overall project cost is now estimated at ₹14,260 crore.

The proposal, expected to be submitted after Diwali, will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) — a public-private partnership where the government funds 40% of the project, while private investors contribute 60%.

“If work begins by 2026, the expansion could be completed by 2029–30. The implementing agency is likely to be appointed by March 2026,” said an MSRDC official.

The 94.6-km expressway, connecting Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai to Kiwale near Pune, currently carries around 65,000 vehicles daily on weekdays and over 1 lakh on weekends, with traffic increasing by 5–6% each year.

The proposed project will complement the ongoing 13-km “missing link” development near Khandala Ghat, creating a seamless 10-lane corridor across the route.

Officials said minimal land acquisition will be required as most of the area is already owned by MSRDC. The toll collection, valid till 2045, may also be extended to support the project’s financial viability.

Local leaders, including MLA Mahesh Landge, have welcomed the initiative, calling it a “future-ready move” to strengthen Maharashtra’s road infrastructure.
