Mumbai : The Mumbai Crime Branch has busted a fake call centre operating from Goregaon East and arrested 13 people for allegedly duping US citizens by posing as representatives of leading antivirus companies.
Police said the accused pretended to be linked with well-known brands such as McAfee and GreekSquad. They sent emails to American citizens urging them to renew their software subscriptions through a toll-free number. Once contacted, the victims were pressured to buy gift cards worth USD 250-500, which were later converted into cryptocurrency.
Acting on a tip-off, officials raided the seventh floor of a commercial building in Goregaon, seizing 15 computers, 10 laptops, and 20 mobile phones. Those arrested include two operators, one manager, and 10 telecallers.
A case has been registered under sections of the Information Technology Act and the Telecommunications Act, 2023. The accused are set to be produced before the court as investigations continue.
