Mumbai – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is launching a pilot project to conserve water and replenish the city’s declining groundwater levels. Four borewells will be constructed at strategic locations — Baptista Road Market, Cresto Mukund House, BEST Depot, and the Fire Brigade premises on SV Road — to facilitate rainwater harvesting and water recycling for non-potable use.
The ₹28.3 lakh project, led by the Environment and Climate Change Department, aims to combat groundwater depletion and seawater intrusion in existing wells. Each recharge well, costing around ₹4–5 lakh, will channel rooftop rainwater into filtration systems before directing it into nearby wells.
Officials say road concretisation has reduced natural rainwater absorption, making such initiatives crucial. The borewells, expected to be completed in three months, will use sand, pebble, and gravel filters to ensure clean percolation and sustainable water replenishment.
