Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received 410 applications on Thursday, the last day for submitting suggestions and objections regarding the demarcation of 227 electoral wards. In comparison, 631 applications were submitted during a similar process ahead of the 2017 civic elections.
The draft ward boundaries, published on August 22, remained unchanged at 227 wards, the same as in 2017. A senior civic official confirmed that applications are yet to be categorised or analysed.
Ward boundary demarcation is carried out ahead of elections to account for demographic shifts and infrastructure changes. Following the publication of provisional ward limits, the BMC invites public feedback before conducting hearings.
Officials said the final list of ward boundaries will be published in the first week of October, after which the ward reservation process will begin. The last BMC elections were held in February 2017, and since the end of corporators’ terms in 2022, the civic body has been under administrative rule.
