Mumbai Metro 3 Goes Underground: Faster, Cooler, Smarter Commute Begins May 10

Share:

The long wait is finally over for thousands of daily commuters in Mumbai. The Aqua Line of Metro 3 is all set to be inaugurated on Friday, May 9, with services opening to the public from Saturday, May 10. Reports suggest that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will do the honors at the inauguration ceremony.

What is Metro Line 3?
Metro Line 3 is Mumbai’s first fully underground metro corridor. The new 22 km stretch, from Aarey to Worli Naka, connects key urban hubs like Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex). When the full 33.5 km line becomes operational, it will extend from Aarey Depot in the north to Cuffe Parade in the south, with 27 stations including major junctions like Mumbai Central, CSMT, and Churchgate.

Why It Matters
This metro line promises to be a game-changer for Mumbai’s transportation network. It will significantly reduce travel time between residential and commercial zones, help decongest roads, and lower pollution levels.

Roads like Lady Jamshedji Road and Dr Annie Besant Road, often choked with traffic, are expected to see relief.
Fares range from ₹10 to ₹60, making it a cost-effective option for many.
However, certain gaps remain—such as the 1 km distance between the Dadar Metro and main railway station, which could pose challenges for last-mile connectivity.
World-Class Facilities
Stations are equipped with modern amenities:

Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates for seamless access
Elevators and wide staircases to improve accessibility
Bright, clean interiors for a smooth commuter experience
Photos released by Mumbai Metro 3 showcase sleek designs at major stations like Worli, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Acharya Atre Chowk. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the team described how the Acharya Atre Chowk station was constructed amid heavy traffic and dense underground utilities—a feat of engineering and planning.https://x.com/mumbaimetro3/status/1913802661599621134?s=

A Greener, Faster Mumbai
With Aqua Line 3, Mumbai moves closer to a future of modern, efficient, and eco-friendly public transport. As more phases roll out, the line is expected to become a vital link in the city’s urban mobility ecosystem, connecting railway hubs and business districts seamlessly.
