Mumbai : A 51-year-old businessman from Nepean Sea Road, engaged in the import of chemicals and petrochemicals, has lodged a complaint with Mumbai Police alleging death threats from the Chhota Shakeel gang linked to a long-standing Iran oil trade dispute.
According to the complaint, the businessman imported oil from Iran in 2015, making payments in Dubai due to U.S. sanctions. However, the Iranian supplier later claimed non-payment and secured an ex-parte arbitration award in Iran. A subsequent plea to attach his properties was rejected by the Bombay High Court, though civil proceedings remain pending.
The complainant alleged that since June, he has received extortion calls from Pakistan, demanding between ₹20 million and ₹800 million, threatening him with dire consequences if he failed to comply.
Mumbai Police’s Anti-Extortion Cell has begun investigating the case, probing possible international links between organized crime networks and foreign trade disputes.
