Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued Request for Proposals (RFPs) for the ₹980 crore modernisation of the Deonar abattoir under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The project, which includes approximately ₹250 crore for core operations, aims to establish species-specific slaughterhouses for sheep/goat, poultry, buffalo, and pig.
Dedicated Units for Livestock
The modernisation plan includes separate units with capacities of 1,100 buffaloes, 10,000 goats/sheep, 500 pigs, and 40,000 poultry birds per day. The turnkey tender encompasses planning, design, construction, and commissioning of common facilities, including lairages, an administrative building, a skill center, food court, bio-methanisation unit, and effluent treatment plant.
PPP Model Details
Under the 20-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) concession, private partners will finance and operate the abattoirs, providing slaughter and quartering services at BMC-fixed rates while sharing a portion of revenue with the civic body. The initiative aims to meet meat demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and support export and value-added markets.
Humane and Modern Slaughter Techniques
Officials highlighted that the upgraded abattoir will employ humane slaughter methods using automated electrical stunners, group stunning pens, and CO₂ technology. Modern common facilities will ensure hygiene, operational efficiency, and public amenities, creating an integrated meat processing hub.
This project marks a significant step in modernising Mumbai’s meat infrastructure while ensuring humane and efficient operations.
