Mumbai :- As part of its pre-monsoon preparedness, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified desilting operations across major and minor drains (nallahs) and rivers throughout the city. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shri Bhushan Gagrani conducted a detailed inspection of desilting activities in the Western Suburbs on Tuesday.
During the visit, Shri Gagrani reviewed the progress of the ongoing works and issued necessary directives to officials. He emphasized that all desilting targets must be achieved by May 31, 2025, and stressed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted water flow in drains and rivers. Additionally, he directed that flood control gates remain fully functional and trash booms be installed where required.
So far, 43% of the desilting work has been completed, with the remaining scheduled for completion in the coming month. A key highlight of this year’s operations is the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for analyzing video recordings of silt removal. This marks the first-ever deployment of AI in desilting activities by BMC, aimed at enhancing transparency and supervision.
Shri Gagrani also appealed to citizens not to dispose of waste into drains, reinforcing the civic body’s commitment to maintaining effective drainage and flood prevention systems.
Officials from the Storm Water Drainage Department accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection.
