Mumbai : The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has issued a stern warning to a bar and restaurant in Kandivali East for naming the establishment ‘The Shivaay’, claiming it disrespects Hindu sentiments by linking a revered deity to alcohol and meat.
Located in Gokul Nagar, the bar has drawn objections from local residents in recent days. Responding to public concerns, MNS Divisional Secretary Rakesh Shankar Dhanawade delivered an official letter to owner Pankaj Shukla, demanding that the name be changed immediately.
“The term ‘Shivaay’ clearly refers to Lord Mahadev. Associating his name with a liquor-serving business is not just inappropriate—it’s unacceptable,” Dhanawade stated.
He also referenced a Maharashtra government resolution from June 4, 2019, which bans businesses dealing in liquor or non-vegetarian food from using names of gods, saints, national icons, or historical sites.
The establishment’s license is currently in the name of Shukla’s wife. Dhanawade warned that if the bar fails to comply, the party will resort to protest “in true MNS style.”
“We are giving a democratic warning for now, but if ignored, we will launch an agitation. We won’t allow the disrespect of our deities,” he added.
While the bar has reportedly agreed to review the demand, no official confirmation about a name change has been made yet.
