Mumbai, June 16, 2025 :-

In a bold push to expand Mumbai’s metro network, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is proceeding with the construction of the city’s largest integrated metro depot at Mogarpada near Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Spanning a massive 430 acres (approximately 174 hectares), the depot is intended to serve Metro Lines 4, 4A, and potentially the upcoming Lines 10 and 11—playing a pivotal role in transforming connectivity between Mumbai and Thane.

Despite facing stiff resistance from a section of local residents, the ₹906 crore project has gained momentum with a contract awarded to the joint venture of SEW Infrastructure and Vishwa Samudra Engineering. Once completed, the depot will feature a state-of-the-art operational control centre, administrative offices, staff quarters, auxiliary substations, ten workshop lines, ten inspection bays, and stabling yards that can accommodate up to 64 trains—half of which will be active initially, with the rest reserved for future expansion.

However, the project has hit a snag due to ongoing opposition from around 167 locals, many of whom claim to have cultivated parts of the land for decades. While MMRDA has offered compensation—22.5% of developed land to title holders and 12.5% to non-title cultivators—a number of residents have yet to accept the terms, refusing to vacate the area.

In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered authorities to proceed with eviction of those obstructing the project, emphasizing its strategic importance to Mumbai’s mass transit ecosystem. Physical possession of the land is still pending, and eviction proceedings are now expected to clear the way for full-scale development.

To avoid delays in upcoming metro service rollouts, MMRDA is also considering a temporary pit line installation near the depot site to facilitate early train trials. Moreover, plans are underway to lay ballastless tracks connecting the depot to Mulund Fire Station and Gaimukh Station, reinforcing the project’s long-term significance.

Once operational, this mega depot will serve as the backbone of Mumbai’s growing metro network—enabling efficient train maintenance, faster deployments, and greater frequency across multiple corridors. As Mumbai strives to modernize its transportation infrastructure, the Mogarpada depot stands as a critical milestone in reshaping how the city moves.
