Railway authorities and law enforcement intensify probe amid public outrage over safety concerns.

KALYAN : A disturbing incident of assault against a minor girl aboard a moving express train near Kalyan has triggered widespread outrage and prompted an urgent police investigation. The crime reportedly occurred on June 25, 2024, while the train was en route, though the exact route and train number remain undisclosed pending the probe.
According to preliminary reports, the victim — a 14-year-old girl — was allegedly targeted by an unidentified assailant in a general compartment during peak travel hours. Fellow passengers alerted railway officials at the next station, leading to the immediate involvement of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP). The victim received medical assistance and counseling, while authorities secured CCTV footage from the coach to identify the perpetrator.
Senior police inspector Rajesh Devre of the GRP confirmed, “A case under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code has been registered. Special teams are scanning footage and interviewing witnesses to expedite the arrest.” He urged passengers with information to come forward anonymously.
The incident has reignited concerns about women’s safety on Indian railways, especially in non-AC coaches. Local activists and politicians have demanded heightened surveillance, increased RPF patrols, and emergency alert systems in trains. “This is a systemic failure. We need immediate measures to prevent such horrors,” stated Meena Kulkarni, a child rights advocate from Thane.
Railway officials assured the public of coordinated efforts with police to enhance security. Meanwhile, the victim’s family has been provided legal and psychological support. Investigations continue as authorities work to trace the suspect amid calls for swift justice. Further updates are expected as the probe unfolds.
