Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil’s Remarks on Loan Waiver Spark Controversy in Maharashtra

Mumbai : A major controversy erupted in Maharashtra after Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil made a statement about farmers repeatedly seeking loan waivers. While speaking at a public event in Malshiras, Vikhe Patil reportedly said, “Farmers form societies, take loans again and again, and then demand loan waivers. This has been happening for years — it’s not our job to worry about it.”

The remark triggered widespread criticism from opposition leaders and farmer organizations, who accused the minister of being insensitive towards the struggles of the farming community.

Responding to the backlash, Vikhe Patil later clarified that his statement was misinterpreted. He emphasized that the MahaYuti government under Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had already announced a 100% loan waiver for farmers, and that the administration is committed to supporting both farmers and youth through various development initiatives.

The controversy, however, continues to stir political reactions across the state, with opposition parties calling for an apology and demanding accountability from the government.
