MHADA Hands Over 556 Flats in Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment, Marking Historic Housing Milestone

Mumbai : In a landmark step towards fulfilling a decades-old housing promise, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) on August 14 handed over keys to 556 brand-new flats to original tenants of the Worli Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) Chawl.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, personally distributed the keys, marking the completion of the first phase of Asia’s largest urban renewal initiative.

Residents who once lived in cramped 160 sq ft rooms now move into spacious 500 sq ft, two-bedroom ownership flats with modern amenities—completely free of cost. CM Fadnavis likened the flats to “treasures more precious than gold,” urging residents to preserve them for future generations rather than sell.

The Worli BDD redevelopment will eventually rehabilitate 9,689 families in 34 towers of 40 storeys each, preserving cultural heritage while providing world-class living spaces. The government is also considering joint allotment in the names of both husband and wife, and one old chawl will be converted into a museum to preserve its history.

Deputy CM Shinde hailed the milestone as a transformation from “matchbox homes” to modern high-rises with gardens, playgrounds, and clubhouses. Deputy CM Pawar called it an “emotional moment” and reaffirmed commitment to similar projects in Dharavi and other parts of Mumbai.

The project, executed directly by MHADA without a private developer, also includes eco-friendly features like solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and waste management. The second phase is expected by October–November and the third by December, after which all Worli BDD residents will be rehabilitated.
