In a significant development for Mumbai’s public transportation, trial runs have commenced on Metro Line 9, connecting Kashigaon to Dahisar East. This 13.6 km corridor, marking the first metro line in the Mira-Bhayandar region, aims to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion in the area.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. The officials participated in a brief trial ride, symbolizing the commencement of dynamic testing on the line. Currently, 96% of the civil work and 75% of system integration have been completed, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) targeting the commissioning of a 4.4 km stretch between Dahisar and Kashigaon by the end of the year.

Metro Line 9 is designed to provide direct connectivity to key areas of Mumbai, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Andheri, and Ghatkopar, through seamless interchanges with existing metro lines. The line will integrate with Metro 2A at Dahisar East, facilitating access to the Link Road, and will eventually connect with upcoming corridors like Metro 10 and Metro 13, extending reach to Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts.

A notable feature of this project is the construction of a double-decker bridge, the first of its kind in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, combining a metro line on the upper deck and a flyover on the lower deck. This innovative structure is expected to ease congestion on the Western Express Highway and improve overall traffic flow in the region.

The MMRDA has outlined plans to expand the metro network further, aiming to add 50 km of new metro routes in 2025, 62 km in 2026, and 60 km in 2027, reflecting the state’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility.
