Mumbai, June 10, 2025 – A third-year MBBS student was found dead in her hostel room in Mumbai in what police believe to be a case of suicide. The 21-year-old was enrolled in a well-known medical college in the city and was reportedly under considerable pressure related to academics and her family’s financial condition.
Preliminary details suggest that the student had been struggling with her coursework and was also distressed about mounting problems at home. Though no suicide note was recovered from the room, her friends told investigators that she had been unusually quiet and anxious in recent weeks.
The incident came to light when hostel staff noticed she had not stepped out of her room all day and alerted authorities. Police reached the spot and took the body for postmortem. Her family has been informed.
A police officer involved in the case said, “We are continuing our inquiry. At this stage, it appears academic stress and financial hardship may have played a role.”
The case has once again sparked conversations around mental health concerns among students, particularly those in high-pressure academic environments like medical colleges.
Authorities are urging students facing personal or academic struggles to seek support through institutional counselling services or mental health helplines.
