Mumbai : In two separate incidents of attempted extortion, Mumbai police have arrested four people, including a 26-year-old man who claimed to be a member of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

In Goregaon, police arrested 26-year-old Tejas Shelar, who allegedly demanded ₹25 lakh in cash and 1 kg of gold from a businessman after losing around ₹3.5 lakh in an online gambling game. Shelar, who had worked at the complainant’s chemical factory for over two years, reportedly threatened the businessman and his family, claiming that shooters had been sent to his office, factory, and residence. The victim approached police after receiving multiple threatening calls.

The investigation, led by DCP Zone XI Sandeep Jadhav and Senior Inspector Suryakant Kharat, revealed that Shelar was addicted to online gaming and attempted extortion to recover his losses. He is currently in police custody, and further investigation is underway.

In a separate case in Charkop, police arrested three people—Taranum Khan, Sanjani Padwal, and Umar Lukman Khan—for allegedly extorting ₹2 lakh from ration shop owner Nitesh Manyu Jaiswal. The accused falsely claimed the shopkeeper was storing stolen ration stock and threatened him with false legal complaints to force payment. Police registered a case after the shopkeeper’s complaint, and the accused were released on notice.

These arrests highlight the growing misuse of threats and online intimidation to extract money, prompting vigilance among citizens and authorities.
