Mahim : Pranali Girish Raut, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader from Mahim, has sounded a public health alarm over growing fly-borne diseases caused by open dumping of garbage in parts of Mahim West. She emphasized that the presence of uncovered garbage piles is turning the locality into a breeding ground for flies, mosquitoes, and rats, triggering a rise in illnesses such as typhoid, cholera, diarrhea, and hepatitis A.

“Flies on open garbage are more than a nuisance—they are active carriers of deadly infections,” Raut said, calling for urgent intervention by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Raut outlined multiple risks including disease transmission, food and water contamination, and serious threats to children and the elderly. She warned of a “vicious cycle” where poor sanitation leads to disease, which in turn results in greater medical waste and burden.

She demanded that the BMC and civic authorities launch emergency clean-up operations, enforce stricter garbage disposal rules, and increase sanitation staff deployment. She also urged citizens to cooperate and avoid throwing garbage on roads and footpaths.

“Clean roads are not just a matter of appearance—they’re essential for a healthy Mahim,” she said.

Supporting her concern, Irfan Machiwala from the Mahim Residents Group also appealed to locals to act responsibly and maintain hygiene in public spaces.

The issue has sparked growing concern among Mahim residents, who are now demanding lasting solutions to the long-standing garbage problem.
