Mumbai: In a major crackdown on organized crime, Maharashtra Police detained 13 individuals allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang during a raid on a suspected hideout in Amravati on Thursday. The action followed intelligence inputs and was carried out jointly by Amravati Rural Police, Mumbai Crime Branch, and Nagpur Police.
According to officials, the suspects attempted to flee when police entered the premises, mistaking them for intruders. Warning shots were fired before the suspects were subdued.
Some of the detainees are said to be natives of Kaithal, Haryana, engaged in the herbal trade. Notably, Gurmel—an accused in the Baba Siddique murder case—also hails from Kaithal.
All 13 suspects are currently being questioned at Paratwada Police Station. However, Mumbai Crime Branch officials confirmed that no arrests have been made so far.
The Bishnoi gang, led by Lawrence Bishnoi from prison, has been linked to extortion rackets, contract killings, and even the recent attack on Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence. The gang drew international attention after Canada recently designated it as a terrorist entity, prohibiting support or funding.
Police said investigations are ongoing, and further action will depend on the questioning of the detainees.
