Mumbai : In a bid to boost public trust in food safety and hospitality standards, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is set to launch a hygiene rating system for restaurants, food delivery outlets, hotels, and resorts across the state.
The initiative aims to grade eateries listed on food delivery platforms based on hygiene, food quality, safety practices, staff training, and proper licensing. A five-star rating system is proposed, with the top rating reserved for outlets meeting all key benchmarks.
Prompted by growing complaints about stale or incorrect food deliveries, the FDA is working closely with delivery platforms to display these official ratings alongside restaurant listings. The move is expected to push establishments toward higher standards while giving consumers more reliable information than customer reviews alone.
Hotels and resorts will also be brought under the rating system, enabling travelers to make more informed and safer accommodation choices.
FDA Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar confirmed the initiative is in early stages but has been positively received by major industry stakeholders.
