Maharashtra FDA Bans Toxic Cough Syrup Batch After Child Deaths in MP, Rajasthan

Mumbai : Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has imposed an urgent ban on batch SR-13 of Cold-Ref (Coldrif) cough syrup after child deaths were reported in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Laboratory tests found the syrup contained 48.6% diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic chemical used in antifreeze and brake fluids, which can cause kidney failure and death. The batch was manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu.

States including Maharashtra, Kerala, and Telangana have already recalled the syrup, suspended sales, and issued public advisories. The FDA has directed inspectors to seize stocks, stop distribution, and test samples to prevent further risk.

Parents have been urged to check their medicine cabinets and report any stock of batch SR-13. The FDA has set up a toll-free helpline (1800-222-365), email (jchq.fda-mah@nic.in), and mobile number (9892832289) for assistance.

Authorities warned that even small doses of the syrup can be fatal for children and vowed strict action against the manufacturer and distributors.
