Mumbai:- In a landmark move to ease the financial burden on citizens, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a historic reduction in electricity bills—the first such move in the state’s history. Sharing the announcement on social media, Fadnavis called it “good news” for consumers across the state, revealing that electricity tariffs will be reduced by 10% starting this year.

The reduction, which will be rolled out in phases, aims to achieve a total cut of 26% in power bills over the next five years. Approved by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), the plan follows a proposal by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). In a system where tariff hikes have traditionally been the norm, this shift marks a rare and significant consumer-first approach.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the first year will bring immediate relief through a 10% reduction, while further phases will continue to ease the burden on households, businesses, and industries. Notably, nearly 70% of consumers—particularly those using under 100 units per month—are expected to benefit the most.

In addition to slashing tariffs, the government is also focusing on renewable energy as part of its long-term energy strategy. Under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0, the state aims to deliver reliable daytime electricity to farmers through solar power. Fadnavis emphasized that the initiative is not just about lowering bills, but also about pushing for sustainability and energy security for the future.

“This decision gives me immense satisfaction. It is a historic, people-centric move that directly eases the financial burden on citizens while pushing for sustainable energy solutions,” he stated.

The announcement has been welcomed across sectors as a major step toward making electricity more affordable and accessible, while reinforcing the state’s commitment to cleaner and more reliable energy for all.
