Kurla Residents March to Azad Maidan in Protest Against Dharavi Redevelopment Plan

Mumbai : A determined protest march unfolded today as Lok Chalwal, a residents’ collective from Kurla, led hundreds of local citizens in a padyatra from Kurla Dairy to Azad Maidan. Their message was clear—strong opposition to the government’s decision to allocate approximately 21.25 acres of Kurla Dairy land for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, intended for rehabilitating Dharavi residents deemed ineligible for in-situ housing within Dharavi .

The protest route wound through Dharavi and stopped at Sena Bhavan before concluding at Azad Maidan, where a delegation prepared to deliver a memorandum to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence, Varsha .

Residents strongly condemned the transfer, citing a prior assurance by former Chief Minister (and now Deputy CM) Eknath Shinde that the land would be preserved for community use—as a sports complex and garden—rather than being handed over for relocation purposes .

Simultaneously, the opposition emphasized that the move represented not only a betrayal of public trust but also an environmental and infrastructure concern, as the land serves as vital green space for the densely populated Kurla East area.
