A businessman from Kalyan, Maharashtra, was allegedly cheated of ₹12.2 lakh by three individuals who falsely promised to secure his son’s admission into a junior college despite the boy having failed his Class 10 board exams, police said on Tuesday.

According to officials, the accused fabricated a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) passing document to convince the complainant of their credibility. They assured him they could secure admission for his son at a local college in Thane district.

The situation escalated when the accused claimed that one of their associates had been “arrested” while transporting the fake certificate. They then pressured the businessman to pay ₹12.2 lakh to avoid potential legal action against his son.

The alleged fraud occurred between September and December 2024. Once the businessman realized he had been deceived, he approached the police.

A case has been registered under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 336(2) (forgery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
