JJ Hospital Doctors, Interns & Students Stage Token Strike Against Inclusion of Homeopaths in Maharashtra Medical Council

Mumbai: Resident doctors, medical interns, and students at Grant Government Medical College (GGMC) and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals staged a token strike on Thursday, opposing the state government’s decision to allow homeopaths into the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) after completing the Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP).

The protest, backed by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI), and Government Medical College Students’ Association (GMCSA), aligns with national medical bodies including the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA).

The strike began with a gathering at the JJ Hospital Amphitheatre at 9:30 am, followed by a media interaction. Organisers clarified that the protest is symbolic in nature, with emergency and critical medical services remaining fully operational.

Doctors argue that including homeopathic practitioners in an allopathic council compromises the integrity of modern medicine and risks confusion in regulation and accountability. While outpatient services may face delays, senior doctors are stepping in to ensure patient care is not neglected.

In Thane, resident doctors at Rajiv Gandhi Government Medical College (RGMC) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital (CSMH) also joined the statewide protest, staging a demonstration outside the OPD building at 10:30 am.
