Mumbai : In a major operation, the Customs Department at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has seized gold valued at ₹1.02 crore from a passenger. Officials said the 24-carat gold dust was cleverly concealed inside wax.

According to authorities, the seizure took place on August 25, 2025, during a routine inspection. Suspicious of the passenger’s luggage and behavior, officials conducted a search and recovered the gold hidden on the person. Investigations revealed that the accused had wrapped the gold dust in four separate pieces of wax. The total net weight of the gold was 1.075 kilograms, with an estimated international market value of ₹1.02 crore.

The Customs Department stated, “The passenger was immediately arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.” Interrogation is ongoing to determine the gang behind the smuggling and the extent of its network.

To prevent gold smuggling, the Customs Department maintains constant vigilance and conducts strict inspections. Experts say that smugglers have increasingly used creative methods to hide gold, including in electronic devices, clothing, body cavities, and even food items.

Officials at Mumbai Airport said the recent seizure was made possible due to their alertness and advanced technology. Authorities emphasized that no leniency will be shown in such cases, and strict action will continue against smugglers.
