India is set to overtake Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy in 2025, according to the latest World Economic Outlook report (April 2025 edition) released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). India’s nominal GDP for 2025 (FY26) is projected to reach $4,187.017 billion, slightly ahead of Japan’s estimated GDP of $4,186.431 billion.
Until 2024, India held the position of the fifth-largest economy globally. With this advancement in 2025, it will climb one spot higher. Looking ahead, the IMF forecasts that India will surpass Germany by 2028 to become the third-largest economy in the world. By then, India’s GDP is expected to reach $5,584.476 billion, overtaking Germany’s projected $5,251.928 billion.
India is also on track to become a $5 trillion economy by 2027, with its GDP estimated at $5,069.47 billion.
